HYDROGEN WELL TO THE FORE AT ALL-ENERGY AND DCARBONISE

Following the opportunity to ‘Meet the Minister' featuring a keynote address and Q&A session by Paul Wheelhouse MSP, Scotland's Minister for Energy, Connectivity and the Islands, hydrogen will be the focus of attention in the Day 2 plenary session at All-Energy and Dcarbonise on 16 May at Glasgow's SEC. An hour's discussion on "Why might the hydrogen economy finally have its day?" will take place.

Carbon Connect has produced a series of reports on the ‘Future of Gas', thanks to a cross-party parliamentary enquiry co-chaired by MPs Alan Whitehead, Alan Brown and James Heappy, also with some prior involvement of Calum McCaig and Alistair Carmichael.

In the Day 2 plenary session Keith MacLean OBE, Managing Director of Providence Policy, who worked with Carbon Connect on the reports, will explore the idea that hydrogen could do much of the ‘heavy lifting' sitting alongside other low-carbon gases playing complementary and transitionary roles.

Then. under the expert eye of session Chair, Matthew Knight, Head of Business Development Power and Gas at Siemens, who will also join in the discussion, the panellists Joanna Coleman OBE, UK Energy Transition Manager at Shell UK, and Angus McIntosh, Director of Energy Futures at SGN will give their thoughts and then the discussion will begin, including views from the floor. Like all conference sessions at All-Energy and Dcarbonise this is free to attend for all with relevant business/professional interests- registration is at www.all-energy.co.uk

Hydrogen features on the exhibition show floor with a double-decker hydrogen bus from Alexander Dennis; a hydrogen powered Mirai from Toyota amongst the many low carbon vehicles on display; an electric Kangoo van with a fuel cell range extender; and via exhibitors such as Black & Veatch, ENERCON; HV Systems, the Norco group; Viessmann and Wurth Electronics.

Hydrogen in the wider conference and seminar programmes
"Not long ago there would be just one hydrogen and fuel cell (HFC) session at All-Energy, now it is featured in All-Energy and the new co-located Dcarbonise in many ways, for heat, transport, storage, the success of Orkney's hydrogen economy, and even offshore hydrogen production," explains Event Director, Jonathan Heastie of Reed Exhibitions. "A search through the entire conference programme reveals over mentions and in the HFC session not all of the presentations bear the word ‘hydrogen'!

"In addition to the plenary session on Day 2, in the main conference there are presentations featuring hydrogen in Innovate UK's Clean Growth Innovation Showcase; in the energy storage sessions; in our low carbon transport ‘Smart Urban Mobility Solutions' conference stream; and in the ‘Net-zero Challenge' sessions created by Edinburgh University.

"In our expanded number of show floor seminar theatres, hydrogen is in the spotlight in the Community and Local Energy; Low Carbon Heating; and Research Hub seminar theatres; and extensively in the new Energy Storage and Hydrogen Hub. It also features amongst the Academic Posters in the Academic Zone.

"And, of course in the HFC session where, chaired by Stuart McKay, Hydrogen and Carbon capture Utilisation Storage (CCUS) Policy Lead at the Scottish Government, Dr Robert Sansom, a Fellow of The IET and lead author of the joint Professional Engineering Institutions' report will speak on ‘Hydrogen - Transitioning to Hydrogen: Engineering Risk and Uncertainties'; Jon Clipsham, Hydrogen Manager at EMEC and Hayleigh Pearson of the Oil & Gas Technology Centre will look at offshore hydrogen production, and others in that session will talk of energy storage and conversion, of the development of a zero-emission double deck bus and more."
