Engineering Society of Detroit Conference on Alternative Energy

The ESD, the acronym for the Engineering Society of Detroit, is now 115 years old and it remains an august institution in the City of Detroit. Once housed in a magnificent marble building next to the Detroit Institute of the Arts it is an encompassing institution that holds many fine conferences on Engineering developments and Issues. Their recent conference held on March 3rd on Alternative Energy was something of a rousing affair, which we do indeed need since Michigan has been hardest hit in this recent Economic turn-down.

After several weeks of economic doom and gloom in the news we walked into a room full of squeeky new booths full of optimistic and excited people showing and talking about a new world where responsible companies lead the way to a renewable energy future. How refreshing is that!

As for trends, I noticed several more thin-film companies exhibiting beside the grandpa of thin-films, UniSolar. These included Opti-Solar, Applied Materials (selling turnkey thin-film fabrication units) and Ascent Solar.

By far the most popular items among the technology-dazzled laymen were the hydrogen fuel-cell vehicles. Among the cars on display were a number of first-generation Honda FCX hatchbacks, which had attracted a crowd clamoring for rides.

Just back from a whirlwind day at Solar 2007 in Long Beach and I gotta say ... this industry is on fire ... finally. On the show floor you literally had to elbow your way down the aisles.

Random Thoughts from this Year's Renewable Energy Fair

Reducing one's energy overhead costs relatively little and produces a revenue stream that appreciates over time. Replacing one's energy infrastructure with on-site renewable systems, in contrast, will require a sizable up-front financial commitment relative to what it will produce over time.
