Brazil's Largest Wind Developer Adopts Remote Sensing Systems from Second Wind
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA and SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, June 5, 2013 – Brazil's largest wind energy developer has adopted Second Wind's remote sensing systems, including the Triton SoDAR and Pentalum's SpiDAR LiDAR, for use in its wind measurement program.
BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, USA and SAO PAULO, BRAZIL, June 5, 2013 – Brazil's largest wind energy developer has adopted Second Wind's remote sensing technology as part of its standard practice in wind measurement. The agreement by São Paulo-based Casa dos Ventos Energias Renováveis to purchase Second Wind's Triton® SoDARs and Pentalum Technologies Ltd.'s SpiDAR™ LiDARs represents a significant endorsement of remote sensing technology as an essential complement to meteorological tower data in wind resource assessment.
Remote sensing systems calculate wind speed, wind direction, and other wind data by measuring reflections or echoes of sound or laser pulses. Triton and SpiDAR are easily relocated and provide wind measurements up to and above a commercial wind turbine's hub height. This answers the wind industry's need for data at higher heights and more locations than can be cost-effectively acquired using met towers.
The decision by an influential Brazilian wind developer to use remote sensing -- Casa dos Ventos deploys 100 meteorological towers annually -- reflects the widespread acceptance of SoDAR and LiDAR technology by the wind power industry.
"The use of remote sensing systems such as SoDAR and LiDAR contribute to a better valuation of our wind resources and a lower uncertainty on the energy-output projection of our wind farms," says Lucas Araripe, Director of Business Development at Casa dos Ventos.
Casa dos Ventos already uses Second Wind's Nomad wind data loggers and sensors on over 250 meteorological towers to measure, record, and transmit wind data on its large portfolio of prospective wind farm sites and working wind farms throughout Brazil. During 2012, Casa dos Ventos purchased and began using several Tritons. The results of six to eight months of operation convinced the company to standardize on and invest in a large number of Tritons. "The performance and data recovery of our Tritons during the first year exceeded our expectations," says Araripe.
In addition, the company's favorable experience with Second Wind's support and field services helped it decide to standardize on Second Wind as a supplier. Araripe says: "When we bought our first Triton, Second Wind arranged for several of our technicians to be trained and certified in Triton installation and operations. With SkyServe, Second Wind's support technicians monitor our Tritons daily and can do remote diagnostics and even certain repairs and upgrades over the Internet. In addition, Second Wind has a local partner who can service our equipment. We are confident in Second Wind's ability to support a large fleet of remote sensing systems."
"By standardizing on Second Wind, Casa dos Ventos has chosen a trusted partner to supply, service, and integrate data from all our wind measurement systems," Araripe adds.
Casa dos Ventos uses Second Wind's SkyServe wind data and monitoring service to integrate the data from their Tritons, SpiDARs, and Nomads on one secure, cloud-based dashboard. "With SkyServe, monitoring our wind projects is easy -- we are able to log in to one system and see everything in one place," says Araripe.
"We are very pleased that Casa dos Ventos has standardized on Second Wind's technology for wind resource assessments," said Larry Letteney, Second Wind CEO. "Brazil is a bright spot in global wind energy development. The Casa dos Ventos team are superb partners and Second Wind is committed to their success -- and the success of the Brazilian wind market."
About Second Wind
Second Wind develops wind measurement systems that enhance the value of wind energy for consumers, investors and the environment. The company's technology provides wind farm developers with dependable wind data they need to plan, finance and operate highly efficient wind generation facilities.
Introduced in 2008, the Triton Sonic Wind Profiler is the wind industry's market-leading remote sensing system. With over 1500 deployments in 35 countries on seven continents, Tritons are being used in greenfield prospecting, wind resource assessment, noise studies, and condition monitoring on operating wind farms.
In January 2012 Second Wind introduced a suite of wind farm operation services for operating wind farms and has worked with its customers to develop specialized grid integration applications. In 2013 Second Wind formed a partnership with Israel-based Pentalum Technologies to sell and service the Pentalum SpiDAR, the industry's first cost-effective wind LiDAR system.
