SPI 2019 - LG Solar

Q&A with Garry Wicka, VP of Marketing | LG Business Solutions

Tell us about your company.

The LG Solar division of LG Electronics USA Business solutions is a leading provider of high-efficiency solar modules for the residential and commercial markets in the United States. LG’s role as a top-tier player in the U.S. market reflects the company’s commitment to delivering advanced renewable energy solutions and builds on LG’s global heavy investments in future growth areas such as high efficiency solar panels, energy storage systems and energy management solutions. What’s more, LG’s new U.S. solar module assembly factory, opened earlier in 2019 in Huntsville, Ala., is enhancing our competitiveness and ability to respond to U.S. customer demand.

Your company will be exhibiting at SPI & ESI 2019, what is it that makes this an important event for your company?

Solar Power International brings together the largest gathering of solar energy professionals in the United States. This not only marks a major moment in time for the industry, but for LG as well, as it is a launchpad for our industry-leading energy solutions for the residential and commercial markets in the United States. SPI 2019 is the epicenter of customer relations, as our team looks to nurture existing relationships and forge new ones at this unique gathering.

What makes your booth a must visit for SPI & ESI 2019 Attendees?

With a full lineup of residential and commercial products on display at SPI 2019, LG offers attendees the opportunity to experience these solutions and more:

LG NeON® R ACe Panel

Launching at SPI 2019, the NeON R ACe is LG’s latest solar power module for residential applications that produces alternating current power output up to 375W along with its newly integrated 320W micro-inverter. Recessed into the frame of the solar module, the integrated micro-inverter allows for the NeON R ACe to be an ideal solution for both installers and homeowners, saving time, space and money. This innovation eliminates the need to purchase a separate inverter, thereby reducing clutter from places such as outside walls and rooms within the home.

LG NeON® 2 Solar Panel

For homeowners and business owners seeking to save on their utility bills and take positive steps for the environment, the LG NeON 2 solar panels offer a new level of performance and flexibility thanks to LG’s innovative Cello™ technology. The 60-cell and 72-cell NeON 2 models are available up to 350W and 420W respectively, with efficiency ratings ranging from 19.3 to 20.2 percent. Assembled in Alabama, LG NeON 2 panels have improved degradation rates with increased power output percentages (90.08 percent) at year 25.

When you get a chance to walk the exhibit hall floor yourself, what is it you will be most interested to see?  Any educational sessions, pavilions etc. you plan on attending?

With a wide range of forward-thinking technologies exhibited throughout the hall, we’re looking forward to seeing how the industry continues to evolve with the unveiling of the latest solar products to hit the market from across the spectrum. It will be interesting to see what others in the solar market are exhibiting at the show and how they fit into the overall marketplace.

Energy Storage is undertaking rapid advancements and growth.  Give us an idea on how your company and product is being utilized now for energy storage.

With energy storage rapidly growing in prominence within the solar industry, LG launched the state-of-the-art Energy Storage System (ESS) last year to help homeowners take total control of their energy usage. LG offers two ESS systems – an AC-coupled system for homeowners who already have solar panels of any type on their homes, and a DC-coupled system as part of a new installation of LG solar panels.  The LG Energy Storage System has received a number of coveted industry awards, including Energy Manager Today’s 2019 Awards, Green Builder Media’s 2019 Hot 50 Awards and Architect’s Newspaper’s 2019 Best of Products Awards.

The ESS system stores energy from the solar panels. That energy can then be used by the homeowner during hours when the solar panels cannot produce energy (such as at night), when Time of Use (TOU) rates for electricity are often highest through the utility companies. Furthermore, it includes “smart energy management” to help customers reduce utility costs by using the stored energy during the most expensive hours. The ESS system will also store about 4 hours of energy that can be used if there is a power outage (up to 19.6KWh for longer back-up time).

LG’s solution offers an easy two-person installation – all required components are included for a complete installation. The battery is extremely reliable, and the system is scalable depending on the size of the installation. The system includes Remote System Monitoring functions. LG Electronics’ ESS can be paired with LG solar modules for single-provider service. The ESS system has a 10-year warranty, and LG solar modules have 25-year performance and product warranties.

Give us your thoughts on what the future holds for energy storage.

With energy storage’s rise in prominence, we believe that we expect to see many new innovations come to this space over the next few years. With this industry being rather new and green, it will be exciting to see how it grows as we move forward from this point.
