APPOINTMENTS ANNOUNCED FOR NREL ADVISORY GROUP

The U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) has recently appointed two new members to its independent panel of advisers.Named to the NREL National Advisory Council were Dr. James Sweeney, professor of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, and Bill Baxter, director of the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

NREL to Host Global Forum on Bioenergy

More than 400 scientists, engineers, industrial leaders, and policy makers are expected to gather for formal presentations, poster sessions and informal discussions about the state-of-the-art technology for producing our consumer and industrial energy needs from sustainable plant and plant-derived materials rather than fossil fuels.

Energy Lab reinforces Earth Day message by reducing impact on environment

Employees at the U.S. Department of Energy's National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) are doing their part to reinforce the message of Earth Day and "walking the talk" by reducing their impact on the environment at work through the Laboratory's "Sustainable NREL" program.

GE Wind Energy announces new series of 2-megawatt class wind turbines

GE Wind Energy plans to expand its family of wind turbines with the introduction of the 2.x series, which will include 2.3, 2.5 and 2.7 megawatt machines designed for a wide range of onshore applications.

Fuel Cell Vehicles to Number 800,000 by 2012, According To ABI

The number of fuel cell vehicles that will be introduced to the world in the coming decade will reach 800,000 by 2012, according to a new study by research firm Allied Business Intelligence (ABI). "Fuel cell vehicles launched by Honda and Toyota will be contributing critical knowledge for early roll outs in niche markets, in the second half of this decade", explains Atakan Ozbek, ABI Director of Energy Research and author of the study.

First Micro Fuel Cell Commercial Product To Appear in 2004, says ABI

Micro fuel cell markets will see their first commercial products in 2004, according to a recent study by research firm Allied Business Intelligence (ABI). Micro fuel cells (MFCs) for consumer electronics will soon be observed in products ranging from wireless handsets to notebook computers to video cameras/camcorders. ABI's study, "Micro Fuel Cell End User Markets," predicts that MFC unit shipments will reach as many as 200 million worldwide by 2011.

Advantages of Electric Automobiles

The automobile manufacturers claim that very few people (apparently less than 1000 people in the USA) are willing to buy electric automobiles. However, I know many of us would like to "refuel" our cars by plugging them into an electric outlet at home. If we work together by educating the public, the news media, and the automobile manufacturers, we can make production volume electric automobiles and Grid Rechargeable (plug-in) electric-biodiesel hybrid automobiles a reality.

Battery Maintenance

Remember to keep your batteries full and happy to improve the performance of your alternative energy system. Since alternative energy is the wave of the future let us pioneers learn how to operate them properly today!

How I Get My Hot Water Fast

Electricity savings for a household of four occupants varied from about 200 kW-h/year to 400 kW-h/year for a single point of use. Extrapolation to a home with at least four points of use would imply electricity savings from 800 kW-h/year to 1600 kW-h/year.

HVAC Zoning Controls

Homeowners would like to increase their comfort level while conserving energy. An excellent method to do this is through zoning. Most two-story homes have an 8 to 10 degree temperature difference between upstairs and downstairs (because heat rises). Additionally, larger ranch homes generally have a big temperature difference between one end of the house and the other (due to the distance of the duct runs).

Make Your Next Science Fair Project Green

One excellent idea is to create a miniature "hybrid" renewable energy power plant. This could be accomplished by combining solar cells and a small windmill kit. Such an idea could graphically demonstrate the complementary nature of these two free power sources.

Making Solar Electric Systems Pay Back Fast

You are an excellent candidate for a solar electric system if your electric bill is over $75 per month, you pay more than $0.12 per kwh for electricity, your state offers substantial rebates for solar electric systems, and you have good solar exposure.
