3TIER Selects Kompact Grid as Partner in Romania
New Relationship Brings Advanced Wind and Solar Forecasting to the Country
LONDON (Nov 18, 2013) – 3TIER®, a global leader in renewable energy assessment and forecasting, today announced that it has secured a partnership with Kompact Grid in Romania. The Bucharest-based company is a subsidiary of EolianExpert and Midas Group and going forward will serve as 3TIER's exclusive authorized reseller within Romania. The new relationship combines the complementary skills of each company and will increase access to state-of-the-art wind and solar forecasting across the country.
With an estimated 14,000 MW of wind energy potential and an average of 210 sunny days per year, Romania has excellent renewable resources and is one of the best locations for new wind development within Europe. While these resources have largely remained untapped, that is all starting to change. With only 14 MW of installed wind capacity in 2009, the country now has over 2,000 MW. Solar installations have also grown from less than 5 MW in 2011 to a pipeline of projects totaling over 400 MW. Despite talk of scaling back the government's aggressive incentives, top-down support remains strong with a goal of 4,000 MW of installed wind capacity by the year 2020 and projected investment of $5.6 billion US (nearly $18.5 trillion RON) into the budding market.
Kompact Grid and its parent company, EolianExpert, have been key partners for the developers driving the exponential growth of renewable energy in Romania. Over the last four years, EolianExpert has provided engineering services for measurement campaigns, project design, and wind analysis on over 20 wind projects totaling more than 1,000 MW. Kompact Grid's focus has been on the grid connection and energy-marketing piece, helping clients quickly navigate legal requirements and increase profit through energy and green certificate sales strategies. The company has earned its reputation as the top provider in this space through its work on some of the largest and most important power plants in Romania and connecting more than 300 MW of wind and solar energy to the grid.
"With so much wind and solar energy coming online in such a short time period, the energy system has had to adapt very rapidly," said Luis Nuche, EMEA Account Manager at 3TIER. "The new government forecasting requirements will improve system management, but also make operators accountable for deviations with imbalance penalty fees. 3TIER is uniquely positioned to fill this gap, having helped clients mitigate this risk for many years within the competitive US wind market as well as several other markets around the world."
3TIER has over 10 years of energy forecasting experience and currently forecasts over 130 GW of installed wind capacity worldwide. In addition, the company developed a state-of-the-art solar forecast in partnership with several large US utilities, which has been piloted, tested, and improved based on performance at actual utility-scale solar projects. 3TIER also has global expertise in estimating pre-construction energy yield for both wind and solar projects, including performing feasibility studies for over 40 GW of proposed on and offshore wind projects and helping solar clients secure over $5 billion in financing worldwide.
