Geotek S.A., Chilean renewable energy services company, signs on as Second Wind Triton partner
Remote sensing demonstration event planned in Santiago; Geotek S.A. begins agreement by installing the Triton for Mainstream Renewable Power in Chile
SOMERVILLE, MASS. and SANTIAGO, CHILE, October 26, 2011 -- Geotek S.A., a Chilean installer of renewable energy generation systems and wind measurement systems, will be the first company to bring Second Wind's Triton Sonic Wind Profiler to the Chilean wind industry for use in advanced wind measurement applications for Mainstream Renewable Power.
"Mainstream has already had favorable experience with Second Wind and Triton. We chose Triton for our wind measurement program in Chile because it will be a reliable source of the hub-height data we need for our project energy estimates," said José Ignacio Escobar, Mainstream Chile's general manager. "Geotek S.A. has significant experience with wind measurement for Chile's wind industry, and we recommended them to Second Wind as a reliable service partner."
Geotek S.A. was founded in 2009 to provide support for Chile's renewable and green building industries. The company operates in both industrial and utility-scale renewables. With many wind resource assessments under their belt for wind farms that are projected to generate over 500 MW of power, Geotek S.A. is involved in a significant portion of Chile's planned wind farms. At the end of 2010, Chile had 172 MW of installed wind energy capacity; projects totalling 2,000 MW are in the development pipeline for 2012-2014.
Geotek S.A. will sell and service Second Wind's Triton® Sonic Wind Profiler and Nomad® 2 Wind Data Loggers. On November 9 in Santiago Geotek S.A. and Second Wind will co-host a remote sensing demonstration event showcasing the advanced wind measurement technology to leading players in Chile's renewable energy industry. Geotek S.A. has also been certified to install and maintain the Tritons.
Triton improves wind farm project financing by measuring wind data at the hub height of a turbine - data that is required as part of the wind farm project financing process and is difficult to obtain using meteorological towers. Using Triton - a self-powered system that operates autonomously - wind farm developers can obtain measured data that they could not get from meteorological towers, and can reduce uncertainty in their annual energy projection (AEP) estimates.
Geotek S.A. already sells, installs, and services small wind turbines, hydroelectric turbines, and solar energy systems, and conducts wind resource assessment projects. "By offering Second Wind's Triton to our customers, we are significantly expanding our offerings in the area of wind resource assessment and wind measurement," said José Manuel Lillo, Geotek S.A.'s business manager. "The Chilean wind industry will benefit from Triton's ability to be deployed in remote locations and measure critical hub-height data."
"Geotek S.A. is a dynamic group of renewable energy engineers and entrepreneurs with deep experience in the wind industry," said Greg Shambo, Second Wind Director of Major Accounts. "We are pleased to welcome them to the team of Triton service partners to support our expansion into the South American wind energy market -- and, more importantly, to support the growth of Chile's wind industry."
