ClimateMaster Units Help Two Ontario University Building Projects Achieve LEED® Certification

ClimateMaster's Tranquility® 20 Single-Stage (TS) Series and Large Vertical (TL) Series geothermal heat pump systems were installed as part of two Ontario-region university construction projects that have recently achieved LEED® certification from the Canadian Green Building Council.

ClimateMaster announces that its Tranquility® 20 Single-Stage (TS) Series and Large Vertical (TL) Series geothermal heat pump systems were installed as part of two Ontario-region university construction projects that have recently achieved LEED® certification from the Canadian Green Building Council. The projects, completed within the past year at the Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning in Mississauga and McMaster University's DeGroote School of Business Ron Joyce Center in Hamilton, have both earned a LEED Silver rating.

Sheridan College Institute of Technology and Advanced Learning (Mississauga)
Opened in September of this year, Sheridan's new Hazel McCallion Campus in Mississauga accommodates 1,760 students of the school's business diploma and post-graduate programs, and also offers a variety of programs and services for new Canadian residents.

Construction of the campus was supported by funding through the Knowledge Infrastructure Program, a two-year, $2 billion economic stimulus measure to encourage infrastructure enhancement at post-secondary institutions across Canada. The program is part of the $12 billion Government of Canada stimulus package announced in Budget 2009, and also aims to reduce energy use and greenhouse gas emissions by promoting the incorporation of sustainable building and renewable energy practices across all funded projects.

A total of 112 ClimateMaster Tranquility TS series and two Tranquility TL series geothermal heat pumps, all featuring environmentally friendly EarthPure® (HFC-410A) refrigerant, were installed on the campus as part of a 400-ton boiler/tower loop system. Additional units are also being considered for inclusion in a second-phase project, which is expected to begin in late 2012 and will increase capacity on the Hazel McCallion Campus to accommodate more than 5,000 students.

McMaster University DeGroote School of Business Ron Joyce Center (Hamilton)
Home to the DeGroote School of Business' MBA and executive education programs, the 90,000 square foot Ron Joyce Centre features state-of-the-art classrooms, meeting spaces and lecture facilities. Its third floor is also exclusively dedicated to executive education, providing a wide variety of learning opportunities for business clients in the Greater Toronto Area and Golden Horseshoe.

Prior to opening its doors in 2010, the Ron Joyce Centre was designed and constructed in alignment with DeGroote's commitment to corporate social responsibility and environmental consciousness. This included the incorporation of a renewable geothermal energy source, and the subsequent employment of one ClimateMaster Tranquility TL series and 95 Tranquility TS series geothermal heat pumps, all with EarthPure refrigerant. The units are part of a 250-ton boiler/tower loop system that supports the Ron Joyce Centre's offices, lecture halls, classrooms and equipment rooms. Also, an additional 15 TS series units were added to the system in 2011.
