Cambridge Condo On Track to Receive Highest Certification by U.S. Green Building Council
Created by PowerHouse, Condominium is Slated to Receive LEED Platinum Certification for Residential Design
Cambridge, Mass., - Sustainable Living, LLC, and its green systems consultant PowerHouse Enterprises, Inc., announced today that their latest Cambridge condo project is expected to receive the platinum LEED rating from the United States Green Building Council.
The platinum rating is the highest level of certification sponsored by the U.S. Green Building Council, a non-profit organization working to promote buildings that are environmentally efficient, healthy and sustainable. There are currently only twelve houses in the United States with this distinction. The two-unit condominiums on Field Street are expected to cut utility bills by about 70 percent and need only 10 percent of the energy of a typical code-built building for space heating - a savings of about $2000 per year at current rates.
"These beautiful homes are the future of housing and are available today in the heart of the most vibrant and innovative regions of the world," said Manny Stefanakis, President of Sustainable Living, LLC, a development company committed to providing the highest standard environmentally friendly and healthy housing in urban environments.
Sustainable Living partnered with green design company, PowerHouse Enterprises to develop this home. PowerHouse specializes in combining advanced construction techniques with eco-responsive design and technologies.
"These units marry space, daylight, and natural energy flows with natural materials and the highest-quality construction systems. As a result, each condo is a beautiful place to live that needs only a small fraction of the energy of a typical unit for heat and other uses," said John Rossi, PowerHouse's Design Principal.
The condos include numerous features such as sustainably harvested building materials, natural finishes of stone, ceramic and bamboo, and electricity and heat from rooftop systems that are seamlessly integrated into a durable and attractive metal roof (produced with recycled metal). In addition, each unit features an advanced ventilation system that pre-conditions and filters incoming air, efficient appliances and lighting, and low flow toilets and showers. In addition to the innovative use of systems, material and design, the project was made possible by an expert team that included NJZ, LLC for general contracting and the Epoch Corporation for module supply.
The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) program is the nationally accepted standard for the design, construction, and operation of high performance green buildings. The LEED rating system was developed to provide the construction and design industry with benchmarks to creating sustainable and energy efficient homes. LEED-certified buildings have reduced operating costs and ensured healthier homeowners while conserving natural resources.
The Cambridge Condominium project uses one of a growing family of designs created by PowerHouse, which also includes single family homes and the PowerPod, a small stand alone unit that can function as an office or small apartment. PowerHouse Enterprises has other projects underway in Falmouth and Lawrence, Massachusetts, and a conservation neighborhood under design for Tenants Harbor, Maine.
