SunTechnics and SunPower Sign Distribution Partnership For High-Efficiency Solar Power Modules
New High-Tech Photovoltaic Modules From SunTechnics Combine Innovative Design and Exceptional Performance
Freiburg, Germany, June 24, 2004: SunTechnics and SunPower Corporation, a Cypress subsidiary, today announced a distribution partnership at the Intersolar 2004 tradeshow. The deal gives SunTechnics exclusive rights to market $40 million to $75 million of select SunPower high-tech photovoltaic (PV) products in Europe through 2005. Made in Germany, SunTechnics' two new modules feature SunPower's unique all-black appearance and all-back-contact solar cells that have conversion efficiencies of more than 20 percent - a world record in mass production. This figure was confirmed by tests conducted at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Colorado, U.S., one of the U.S. Department of Energy's laboratories dedicated to clean energy technology development and a key resource for independent verification of performance measurements.
Higher module efficiency allows homeowners to install more kilowatts of solar power in a given area, optimizing roof space for solar-power generation. The STM 210 F, with a guaranteed minimum power output of 210 watts, comes with a 10-year product warranty and 25-year output warranty. Additionally, the STM 200 F offers an all-black design, where the cells, module background and frame are uniformly black in color. From an architectural viewpoint, this package makes the individual solar cells virtually disappear, lending an elegant appearance to buildings.
"The partnership between SunTechnics and SunPower represents a major milestone in bringing new high-performance and stylish PV modules to the European market," said Tom Werner, Chief Executive Officer of SunPower Corporation. "SunTechnics has built Europe's leading PV sales and installation network, and has a demonstrated capacity to successfully market professionally-engineered, high-value systems in the key market segments. With this new line of 'SunPowered' modules, SunTechnics can offer their customers an unprecedented combination of high-performance and superior aesthetics."
"These new high-performance modules fit perfectly into our complete solar product range," said Dr. Gerwin Dreesmann, Managing Director at SunTechnics. "Our customers can look forward to owning an exclusive, superlative solar module."
New production technology, which is also a world's first, further increases solar efficiency. The conductive metal contacts, which usually collect current on the upper side of the solar cell, are on the back of the silicon cells, providing more opportunity for sunlight to be converted into electricity and eliminating unsightly gridlines. Even at extreme temperatures and sun elevations, the modules supply more power than comparable modules, maximizing yearly energy harvest. This is achieved through better light conversion, even in the longer wavelength portion of the spectrum and from the cells' very low-temperature coefficient. These new modules from SunTechnics are already designed to meet the anticipated International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) standard. This prescribes a greater distance between the cell circuit and the edge of the module to increase electrical reliability and limit energy losses resulting from dirt accumulated on the frame of the module.
The collaboration between SunTechnics and SunPower will produce total volume in the double-digit megawatt range. The first consignments will be available in the third quarter 2004. Interested parties can reserve their system by visiting www.SunTechnics.de.
