SPIRE ESTABLISHES SPIRE FLORIDA INC.

Spire Solar Florida plans to take advantage of the State's renewable energy initiatives and a variety of solar energy incentive programs to offer utilities and other energy users access to Spire's PV systems integration skills.

BEDFORD, MA - September 9, 2003 - Spire Corporation (Nasdaq: SPIR), today announced the incorporation of Spire Florida, Inc., whose initial mandate will be to provide solar electric systems to the sunshine state's renewable energy market. The new company's initial venture, Spire Solar Florida has opened an office located at 6798 Crosswinds Drive, Suite D105, St. Petersburg, Florida 33701, to introduce Spire's photovoltaic (PV) manufacturing technology and systems integration capabilities to Florida utilities, municipalities and alterative energy suppliers.

Spire Solar Florida plans to take advantage of the State's renewable energy initiatives and a variety of solar energy incentive programs to offer utilities and other energy users access to Spire's PV systems integration skills. Support for the new operation will be provided from Spire Corporation's headquarters in Bedford, Massachusetts, as well as from the Company's Chicago-based systems engineering group.

Spire Solar Florida will be modeled, in part, on the Company's successful solar systems business in Chicago, where Spire has teamed with the City of Chicago and ComEd, the local utility, to provide large, grid-connected photovoltaic systems for schools, museums, commercial buildings and multi-family developments. An integrated PV module manufacturing business, Spire Solar Chicago offers complete PV turnkey services ranging from systems design and installation to after-sales service and performance monitoring.

Steve Hogan, Executive Vice President and General Manager of Spire Solar, Inc., stated, "To jump start the Florida operation, we will offer our solar electric systems integration expertise gained during three years of systems installations at more than 30 sites in Chicago. We are especially pleased that the office has been established by Jeremy Jones, a Senior Systems Engineer with extensive experience in our Chicago systems group."

Roger Little, President and CEO of Spire Corporation, added, "Our strategy is to capitalize on the Company's broad-based PV module manufacturing and systems integration know-how by partnering with utilities, municipalities and independent power producers who recognize the merits of distributed energy systems based on solar power. With Florida Solar Energy Center and utilities such as JEA and Tampa Electric promoting wider utilization of green energy, Florida presents a promising market opportunity for Spire."

"The establishment of Spire Florida, Inc.", Mr. Little continued, "positions us to look at Spire Biomedical, as well as Spire Solar opportunities in Florida. Florida is one of the most promising states for developing Spire's Solar and Biomedical activities, and we plan to participate in the expected growth of both sectors."
