New developments in the PV (photovoltaic - solar electricity) world can be found in Southern California. SolarQuilt (patent pending) is set to give commercial-flat roofs an outstanding ability to economically meet their energy demand on site.

The company that has this illustrious feather in their cap is Independent Energy Solutions, Inc., (IES) a veteran of the PV industry with over 40+ years experience. IES is a PV engineering and integration firm located in San Marcos, California.

The roll out of the innovative modular PV design has already begun. The San Diego Regional Energy Office and Arizona Public Service has contracted IES for installations of the SolarQuilt-and there are a number of Manufacturers that are watching with rapt attention to what IES is doing with the SolarQuilt.

The design is simple yet truly effective in offering to the building owner an aesthetically pleasing, lightweight photovoltaic roofing system that rests on flat or low slope roofs, requires no roof penetrations, protects roofs from weather and UV radiation and produces cost effective solar electric energy. The SolarQuilt is a modular system that is easy to install and can be taken apart just as quickly, starting at any point. The design allows for 100% serviceability of the PV system and the underlying roof.

Other benefits are SolarQuilt's insulating property that contributes additional R-value to the roof; a solar array that works at night as well as during the day. SolarQuilt is NEC compliant in its grounding and wiring, can be fully walked on and has been wind tunnel tested to 155 mph.

Unlike competing flat roof photovoltaic systems that deposit mold nutrients (accumulated dust, pollen, etc.) onto the underlying roof during man-made rinsing or rain showers, SolarQuilt's unique design delivers these nutrients to its outer perimeter thereby fortifying the extended life of the building's roof underneath. Furthermore, in contrast to other flat roof PV systems that suffer from the formation of energy robbing sediment ponds, SolarQuilt's undulating topography adeptly eliminates such problems, thereby delivering maximum energy potential.

IES took SolarQuilt to its Patent Pending status in November 2002. IES has completed projects from the far reaches of Micronesia to its hometown of San Marcos. The company focuses on delivering quality in all areas of design and engineering, equipment, installation, after sales service and management. The company's reputation is known for delivering the utmost excellence in engineering at competitive pricing.
