The bright idea was coined when Philips entered and won the Congress' $10million L Prize Competition in 2007 and the bulb will go on sale at Home Depot and other outlets on Earth Day 2012 which is the 22nd April.

The design of the bulb has been called into question though as the light emitting surface is yellow even when it isn't lit, and it shines white when it is alit.
