San Diego, CA — At its fifth annual BOOSTCAP® day held in Fribourg, Switzerland last week, Maxwell Technologies, Inc. (Nasdaq: MXWL) showcased new ultracapacitor products and customer applications, with more than 100 customer representatives from 75 companies in attendance. BOOSTCAP is the name of Maxwell's family of ultracapacitor power and energy products.
The event highlighted a series of Maxwell customers presenting a wide range of success stories involving the use of ultracapacitors in product and system designs. Presenting customers included fuel cell leader Hydrogenics; hybrid electric bus drive system designer, ISE Corporation and aerospace controls maker, Diehl Luftfart Elektronik. Ultracapacitor applications described in this year's presentations included energy storage for fuel cell and hybrid vehicles, fuel cell-powered forklifts, emergency power supply for operation of aircraft doorways, as well as bus, scooter, bicycle and mass transit trolley applications.
Michael Wilk, an electrical engineer at ISE Corporation, presented a paper on his company's hybrid electric drive systems for transit buses. "At BOOSTCAP day 2005," Wilk said, "It was a pleasure to meet others who are using ultracapacitors in their designs and to share our experience using ultracapacitors for energy storage and regenerative braking in our Hybrid Electric bus drive systems. To date, we have logged nearly 1.25 million miles of service using vehicles equipped with the ultracapacitor-based systems. The ultracapacitor design increases the hybrid bus's cleanliness and efficiency, both critical factors in meeting ever stricter customer and government demands"
Dr Adrian Schneuwly, Maxwell's worldwide senior director of sales and marketing, said that this year's customer presentations clearly demonstrate how Maxwell's ultracapacitor cells and modules are becoming a mainstream technology advantage for energy storage and power delivery systems across a number of industries.
"At this event and throughout the year, our customers are reporting results of real applications and experiences using ultracapacitors in electrical power and energy designs. These results are proving that our products deliver technically innovative and reliable solutions in the field," said Schneuwly. "With our latest products delivering high performance at an ever-lower cost, we are seeing ultracapacitors become more widely adopted across a variety of transportation, industrial and automotive applications."
BOOSTCAP ultracapacitors deliver up to 10 times the power and longevity of batteries, require no maintenance and operate reliably in extreme temperatures. In transportation applications, they efficiently recapture energy from braking for reuse in hybrid drive trains, reducing fuel consumption and emissions, and provide compact, lightweight, "life-of-the vehicle" solutions to stabilize automotive power networks and power new, all-electric subsystems, such as drive-by-wire steering. In mission critical industrial applications, where backup power is critical for continued operation or a soft shutdown in the event of power interruptions, they provide reliable, cost-effective, maintenance-free energy storage. In wind turbine blade pitch and braking systems and other industrial applications, they provide a simple, solid state, highly reliable, solution to buffer short-term mismatches between the power available and the power required.
Maxwell is a leading developer and manufacturer of innovative, cost-effective energy storage and power delivery solutions. Our BOOSTCAP® ultracapacitor cells and multi-cell modules and POWERCACHE® backup power systems provide safe and reliable power solutions for applications in consumer and industrial electronics, transportation and telecommunications.
